Everyone likes to eat green vegetables and it is also considered very good for health. Bhindi Fry in Green Vegetables is a very tasty and healthy Indian dish. This food dish is also known as Lady’s Finger Fry and Fried Okra.

Okra or Bhindi is called lady’s finger in English. In India this is a spicy dish served with roti, fried puri, naan and paratha.

One of the most favorite dishes of children, Bhindi Fry is also known as a side dish in the Indian food plate. Bhindi is my children’s most favorite lunch box vegetable and is prepared 3 to 4 times a week for lunch and dinner at my house.

Today I am going to share with you a very easy step by step method of making Bhindi Fry or Fried Okra. I am presenting the steps of this easy and quick recipe of mine in pictures so that you can easily make the perfect and delicious Bhindi Fry Recipe at home.

What is Bhindi or Okra 

Okra or Lady’s Finger which is known as Bhindi in India. It is a green vegetable which is served as a side dish in Indian food. This green vegetable is rich in many nutrients.

This green vegetable is considered to be a source of calcium, enzymes, vitamins, carbohydrates, protein, calcium, potassium and many other health-rich nutrients. This is a healthy food dish for children.

What is Bhindi Fry or Fried Okra Recipe

Bhindi Fry, a dish served in Indian food, is a very tasty, spicy, healthy, one of everyone’s favorite vegetable dish.

In North India, this lady’s finger vegetable dish also known as Bhindi Masala which is eaten with paratha. It is also served as a side dish in breakfast, lunch and dinner.

This recipe of Bhindi can be made in many ways but I have used some spices and tomatoes to make this recipe which further enhances its taste.

You can make this recipe at home using the very easy method shown by me. This is a very quick and easy dish which you can make for your children’s lunch box.

How to make Bhindi fry or Fried Okra

Ingredients

  • Lady’s Finger – 250 gm
  • Tomato – 1 medium size
  • Green Chili – 2 medium size
  • Cumin Seeds – 1/4 tbsp
  • Coriander Powder – 1/4 tbsp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tbsp
  • Salt – 1/2 tbsp ( you can add salt as per your taste)
  • Asafoetida – 1/4 tbsp
  • Dry Mango Powder – 1/4 tbsp
  • Hot Spices Powder – 1/4 tbsp

Ingredients for garnishing

  • Fresh Green Coriander Leaves – 1 small string

Cooking direction step by step

1. First of all, wash 250 gm lady’s finger and 1 medium sized tomato thoroughly with water.

2. Keep the lady’s finger and tomatoes in the basket to dry. Before making Bhindi Fry, it is important to wash Bhindi properly in water and dry it. If lady’s finger remains wet then it becomes sticky.

3. Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a frying pan. Add 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida, 1/4 teaspoon whole cumin in hot oil.

4. When the cumin seeds start crackling, add 2 medium sized chopped green chili slices and fry a little.

5. Add chopped lady’s finger to the frying pan.

6. With the help of a frying stick, mix the lady’s finger with the spices.

7. Let the ladyfinger cook in the frying pan for 1 minute.

8. Add 1 chopped tomato into small pieces in the frying pan.

9. Now add 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt.

10. Mix the spices with the lady’s finger with the help of a frying stick.

11. Leave to cook for 1 minute.

12. Add 1/4 teaspoon garam masala (hot spices).

13. Add 1/4 teaspoon coriander powder, 1/4 teaspoon dry mango powder.

14. With the help of a frying stick, mix the spices with the lady’s finger and leave to cook for 5 minutes on low flame.

15. When the lady’s finger is cooked well and becomes soft, then add freshly chopped coriander to it.

16. Mix chopped coriander with lady’s finger with the help of a frying stick. Delicious, spicy bhindi fry is ready to       serve.

Serve as a side dish – In North India, Okra Fry or Bhindi Fry is also served as a side dish along with other dishes like Aloo Gobi Masala and Curd Bondi Raita.

Can be kept in home party menu dishes – You can keep Bhindi Fry dish in the food menu at your birthday party or any other function. It can also be served with flour garam puri, roti, naan, fried rice and other Indian curry dishes like palak paneer recipe.

Tips for Delicious Bhindi Fry Recipe

Wash Bhindi thoroughly in water and keep it to dry – Before making Bhindi Fry, wash Bhindi thoroughly in water and keep it to dry. Only when the lady’s finger dries well, cut it into small slices. If bhindi remains wet, it becomes sticky which spoils the texture of the recipe.

To make Bhindi, cook it without covering on low flame – To make crispy and tasty Bhindi, it has to be cooked without covering on low flame so that the Bhindi gets cooked well and becomes crispy. On high flame the texture of Bhindi gets burnt and the taste gets spoiled.

Add salt after cooking in frying pan – Lady’s finger is a vegetable which has natural water content in it. While adding salt to the Bhindi recipe, make sure that the Bhindi is cooked properly. Initially Bhindi is raw and on adding salt it releases water which causes stickiness, hence add salt only when Bhindi is cooked well.

Garnish with freshly chopped coriander – Fresh coriander adds more flavor to every recipe. When the lady’s finger is cooked well, finally add freshly chopped coriander to it. The use of coriander further enhances the taste of this recipe.
