Upma is everyone’s favorite breakfast in my house too. I often make upma for breakfast or in the evening with tea. Today I am going to share Upma Recipe, to prepare it we will use some special vegetables and dry fruits which makes this recipe a very healthy snack. In this recipe post, I have explained the easy way to make upma with step by step pictures.

How to Make Upma Recipe

Ingredients for Upma Recipe

  • Rava/Suji (Semolina) – 1 Cup
  • Pure Ghee – 1 tbsp ( you can use Refined Oil or Olive Oil also)
  • Chana Dal (Chickpeas Split) – 1 tbsp (soaked in water for 10-15 min)
  • Mustered Seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Cheshew Nuts – 10-15
  • Curry leaves – 10-12
  • Capsicum – 1 small size (Chopped)
  • Carrot – 1 small size (Chopped)
  • Green Chilli – 2-3 or as per taste
  • Lemon Juice – 1 tbsp or as per taste
  • Salt – 1/2 tbsp or as per taste
  • Asafoetida – a pinch

Ingredients for Garnish

  • Coriander leaves – 1/4 cup
  • Lemon Slice – 1 small size for serving

How to make Upma Recipe Step by Step

1. Pour one cup of rava/suji (Semolina) in a frying pan.

2. Roast the rava/suji (Semolina) on low flame for 5 to 7 minutes while stirring with a pen stick. While roasting rava/suji (semolina), keep in mind that it should not become too brown. When a slight fragrance starts coming from it, take it out from the frying pan and keep it in a bowl.

3. Now put 1 teaspoon mustard seeds, a pinch of asafetida in a frying pan on medium heat. When the mustard seeds start crackling, put 10 to 15 cashews in the frying pan

4. Add a spoonful of gram dal in the frying pan (soak the gram dal for 10 to 15 minutes beforehand so that the dal becomes soft).

5. Put 10 to 12 curry leaves in the frying pan. Stir with a frying stick and mix curry leaves with cashews and gram dal.

6. When the cashews and gram dal turn light golden, add chopped capsicum and carrots to it. Mix the vegetables with cashews and lentils while stirring with a fry stick.

7. Now pour three cups of water in the frying pan.

8. Now add 2 to 3 chopped green chilies.

9. Add ½ tbsp salt. You can add salt as per your taste.

10. To cook the vegetables in water, cover the frying pan and keep it for 1 minute.

11. After 1 minute, when the vegetables are cooked, remove the lid of the frying pan. Now slowly pour the roasted rava / semolina into the frying pan

12. Stir with a fry stick and mix the rava/semolina with the boiled vegetables.

13. Mix semolina/rava by stirring slowly with a fry stick.

14. Now cover the frying pan and leave it for 1 minute.

15. Remove the cover of the flying pen.

16. Add one spoon of desi ghee. Adding ghee will add softness to the recipe and enhance its taste.

17. Now cover the lid of the frying pan and leave it for 1/2 minute. By this process ghee will get mixed well in the recipe.

18. Switch off the gas. To enhance the taste of upma recipe, add the juice of one lemon to the recipe.

19. Garnish the upma recipe with chopped coriander leaves. Adding green coriander makes the recipe very tasty.

Important Tips for Upma Recipe

  • Use of water – If you are taking 1 cup semolina then use 3 cups while making upma recipe. If we use less water then the recipe will remain dry. That’s why take special care of the amount of water.
  • Process of adding rava suji (semolina) in water – Take special care of one thing, while mixing semolina in water. Do not add the whole cup of semolina at once, but add it little by little and keep stirring with a frying stick so that all the suji/semolina mixes well in the water and there are no lumps.
  • Use of Desi Ghee in recipe – Desi ghee is one of the main ingredients used in this recipe. The use of ghee makes the upma very soft, making it a tasty and healthy recipe.
  • Use of Vegetables in recipe – I am using variety of vegetables to make upma recipe delicious. I have used capsicum and carrot here. You can also use seasonal vegetables available in season like peas, cauliflower and beans, which enhance the flavor and make the recipe more healthy.
  • Serving Tips -Serve it fresh to enjoy the upma recipe. Its real taste comes only when eaten fresh. You can keep a piece of cut lemon while serving.
